If you remember the first part of this series, you will recall that the high school’s Light Music Club desperately needed some new blood in their group to keep the club going – they were successful, but only gaining one new member, Azusa Nakano. Yui, Ritsu, Miu and Tsumugi form the group along with Sawako their teacher. They don’t feel they are going to get through so easily, but they make do with their new addition, and find she is actually quite good when they get to know her, and see what she can do.
In Season 2 Part 1, the girls are back at school but in their senior year, and all end up in the same class thanks to Sawako fiddling with the class numbers. They try hard to get new members interested in their club, but feel that they won’t be able to get far as it won’t be long before they graduate and leave. The best thing they can do is have fun and enjoy the short time they will have together.
K-On! Season 2 Part 1 is a character driven comedy that shows a light hearted side to school life, but also at times shows the difficulties associated with growing up, being in love and getting the grades they need to further their respective lives in the hope of the job or careers they want when they finally leave.
The series is more Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya than Clannad, so it didn’t grip me like other anime of the same type, but the animation is clear and crisp and the characters are well animated as well.
As this is also on Blu-ray, it comes as a two disc set with a normal Blu-ray case that has a great picture of the girls having fun. The green colour scheme gives the impression of a spring or summer look so it fits in well with this year. There are no real extras other than clean opening and closing animations plus the usual trailers, but that doesn’t matter with this as it’s a great comedy for those who like comedy anime aimed at a younger audience.
