As an action anime, never let it be said that it doesn't start out a new series without going all out into an explosive introduction with "A Devastating Wish," where it looks like your flat screen TV is quaking from the sheer effort the animators have put into make it an episode to remember. Dragon Ball has made its welcome return with new and improved animation, colours and special effects.

In episode 1, bad guy Pilaf-sama gloats over having the second batch of Dragon Balls, revealing that as these were made before the former kami's strength was halved, when his energy and power was at its fullest it made these balls the best. With that thought in mind, Pilaf believes he is ready to start his quest for world domination, but not before the good guys sort him out first.

Some of the characters have changed as they do age, but Goku has changed a lot - he's a beefed-up young man now who is capable of taking on dangerous foes who try to fire missiles at him, though he isn't a young man for long when Pilaf's minions render him back to the small guy  he was in the previous series. As they had used the ultimate Dragon Balls to do this, the dragon had also granted Goku's greatest wish, and once the Dragon Balls do that, Goku has to go find them all again within a year, or their planet will be destroyed.

I was impressed with the return of this series which stands as long running a one as Naruto or Bleach and is full of surprises, though the bit about Goku having to go after the balls again, isn't such a great one - though it does make for some exceptional episodes and scenes you just can't miss. It is noticeable from the look of the new series that this is a new and improved anime with a more updated animation style that equals many of the newer anime out there.

Bonus Material: None.

Verdict: Cooler than cool - Dragon Ball is set with a new task = get those Dragon Balls!
