Independence Day: Crucible by Greg Keyes

What was arguably one of the most iconic sci-fi movies of the 90s has seen a resurgence, not only as a new movie, but in spanning another series of tie-in novels. Previously, I reviewed the Independence Day: Omnibus which was a three story explanation of what happened during , then after the original movie.

Independence Day: Crucible goes back to 1947 when Corporal Jackson Hardy found the alien along with Reynolds. Back then they thought they could keep what they saw a secret safe from the public though fast forward to 1990 and David Levinson's reunion with President Whitmore in what he calls White House 2.0 can never be forgotten.

As the official prequel novel to Independence Day: Resurgence, Levinson and the president have to come up with ideas as to how to better be prepared for the aliens coming a second time after a distress signal. Levinson and Whitmore are busy working on ways they can use the alien technology against the alien enemy and as they already have it, it is only a matter of time before they can succeed in defeating them if they try to return.

President Whitmore promises that he will get the funds David needs for the space centre and whatever else he requires despite government money not being spent on them really. Levinson urges the president to build a moon base in order to keep a watchful eye on what happens above ground so they can see aliens coming - the emphasis is on there being more surprises out there than the first time they came.

Back in Africa Dikenbe and Bakase had discovered an intact spaceship hoping it would lead them to a breakthrough in stopping the alien menace, what happens is beyond what President Whitmore and David envisioned. Talking with other cultures back in China can only mean the president must gather a united front against the aliens to protect the world from further attack.

If you enjoyed the movies, you can appreciate the books a whole lot more and follow the plot and how interesting and involving the whole story arc is from book to book.
